Warning to Mayweather: Cotto back on track after devastating loss to Margarito

Mayweather vs Cotto Tickets - One who saw the fight might say it was the speed, power and punching accuracy that led Manny Pacquiao to a victory over Miguel Cotto on Nov. 14, 2009.

Cotto himself will tell you differently.

Losing for the first time – and losing as badly as he did – was a far bigger factor in that second career defeat to Pacquiao. Cotto was an undefeated world champion and one of boxing's biggest stars when he was beaten by Antonio Margarito on July 26, 2008, in one of the great fights of recent times. Mayweather vs Cotto

Cotto was way ahead in that fight, but no matter what he landed, he couldn't keep Margarito off of him. But as the fight wore on, Margarito's blows had devastating effect. Cotto had to surrender in order to avoid serious, long-lasting injury.

As it turns out, Cotto did suffer a serious long-lasting injury in that bout. His psyche was ruined and he wasn't the same man after the fight. He carried that loss with him, his confidence drained, his belief in himself no longer absolute.

About six months after Cotto-Margarito I, Cotto may have gotten an explanation for the beating he had taken when Margarito was accused of putting illegal knuckle pads on before a fight with Shane Mosley.

Cotto confident of victory over Mayweather

Mayweather vs Cotto - The ‘will they?’ or ‘won’t they?’ game surrounding a much-hyped-but-not -happening mega-fight between Floyd Mayweather and Manny Pacquiao is like Christmas Day to boxing fans—except the calendar remains stuck on Christmas Eve. It’s not that either fighter has been fighting bums, but the public wants what it wants, when it wants it and Christmas Eve doesn’t quite cut the mustard when your eye is on the gift under the tree.

Christmas Even will come around once again May 5, as Miguel Cotto will try his hands at becoming the first man to defeat “Money” Mayweather as a pro.

At 37-2, Cotto is certainly no pushover. Other than a questionable loss to Antonio Margarito (which was later avenged), the Puerto Rican pugilists only other L is to Pacquiao—and there’s certainly no shame in losing to Pacquiao.

Accomplishments aside, Cotto was relatively modest on a recent call promoting the bout. He’ll defend his WBA Super Light Middleweight title come fight night. Not meeting Mayweather at a catch weight is something the champion is thankful for.

Floyd Mayweather Ready to Make Manny Pacquiao a More Reasonable Offer?

Mayweather vs Cotto Tickets - What’s truly amazing about this boxing soap opera that we recognize as the rivalry between Manny Pacquiao and Floyd Maywearther Jr. isn’t that they haven’t agreed to fight yet. No, that’s the second most amazing thing about it. The most amazing thing, though, is that neither man is prepared to let go of the prospect of this fight happening. Buy Mayweather vs Cotto Tickets

That’s really what’s most fascinating about this whole mess. If both men simply wanted to avoid each because of fear, hurt feelings or anything else – they could just do that. But that’s not the case. These two don’t want to avoid one another. That’s why they take every opportunity available to namedrop each other and, of course, to leave the door open about the bout possibly taking place at some point.

They love all the talk and speculation.

When we last checked in with this dysfunctional couple, Mayweather had extended the most unreasonable offer in the history of boxing to his Filipino counterpart ($40 million with no cut of pay-per-view dough). Pacquiao, predictably -- after explicitly stating that he would be willing to take less money if it meant that Mayweather would agree to fight him -- rejected the offer, and said that he would take nothing less than a 50-50 split.

Looking at Mayweather-Cotto 24/7 Episode 2: Both Fighters Embrace Loyalty

Mayweather vs Cotto - Episode 2 of HBO’s “24/7” series promoting the upcoming junior welterweight championship clash between champion Miguel Cotto and pound for pound star Floyd Mayweather Jr. was shown on HBO this past weekend. This episode heavily focused on not just simply the fighters , but also on the members within each man’s respective camp and the close bonds each fighter shares with his team. Buy Mayweather vs Cotto Tickets

Floyd’s fiancĂ© Ms. Jackson made her first appearance in the series and explained the unbreakable bond she shares with her man. Mayweather meanwhile definitely seems to appreciate the warm presence she brings to his hectic life.

Floyd also took some time to explain his chaotic relationship with his father. After a nasty argument occurred during Floyd’s preparation for the Victor Ortiz fight a few months ago between the two, Mayweather Sr. made his way back to his son’s camp in Episode 1. Floyd hinted in Episode 2 that the issues between the two stems mainly from Floyd Sr.’s desire to always be in control of what is happening and that Floyd Sr. may try to take over control of the gym at any time.

So while the above explains why Floyd Jr. has rifts with his father, it also explains while he has so much love for his uncle and trainer Roger Mayweather. Roger went on to say that he is not authoritative at all towards Floyd and is much more laid back. This passive attitude on Roger’s part plays a big factor in why the abrasive Floyd Jr. favours his uncle over his father.
